Physical DescriptionCartoon lithograph from a book. A man (identifiable as Jay Gould) wears Roman antiquity clothing with a whip (“American Union Telegram”) at his waist. He has a halo made of trains around his head. He is about to turn the screw on a box (“Western Union”), crushing the people inside of it. Caption: “Sanctus Jay-Gouldus”. Historical NoteJay Gould was a railroad investor during the Gilded Age and considered a robber baron. He was involved with New York’s Tammany Hall political machine, which was investigated in 1890 for corruption by the Fassett Committee.
