Physical DescriptionCover cartoon removed from April 13, 1892 Puck magazine. A woman (“Republican Party”) feeds an apple ("Special Legislation") to a horse ("Monopoly") while another horse ("Labor") goes hungry. On the floor, she has a basket (“Legislation in favor of trusts”) of apples (“Bill”, “Bill”, “Bill to help trust”, “Bill to favor monopoly”, “Bill”, “Bill”, and “Bill”) and a bag (“Legislation favoring monopolies”) of sugar cubes. Caption: "Her Pet.". Artist's signature lower right: “F. Opper.”
Historical NoteAfter the Civil War, Republicans dominated much of politics, but during the 1880s and 1890s, that influence started to decline, especially after unpopular laws such as the McKinley tariffs were passed.
