Historical NoteFree Silver was an issue in the 1890s that would have backed the economy by silver and gold instead of just gold. It was supported by populists, farmers, and silver miners, and opposed by businessmen, factories, and railroad companies. The Republicans opposed it and later in the decade, Democrats would begin to support the policy.
