Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ talks to a man with a handkerchief held to his mouth while standing with him on a hill of garbage. LBJ pours water over a single rose bush ("LBJ's Beauty Program") at the top of the hill. A small sign at the bottom of the hill with a skull/crossbones reads: "Contaminated Water". A dead bird falls from the sky. Caption reads: "It's a Start". Artist signature lower right: "Flannery".

Historical NotePresident Johnson signed several laws protecting water quality such as the Water Quality Act, Water Resource Planning Act, Water and Sanitation Systems in Rural Areas Bill, and the Sale Water Conservation Act. Lady Bird Johnson began the Beautification Project to improve urban areas through clean air, clean water, clean roads, waste disposal, and preservation of landmarks and nature reserves.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
