LBJ hands a watering can ("State Planning and Maintenance") to a Louisiana gentleman for a tree ("Beautification Hopes") with a large root ball ("$90,797,465 Federal Aid to Louisiana for Interstate Highways-1967"). Caption: “This Tree Should Grow in Louisiana!”. Artist signature lower right: “Temple".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: "To President Johnson best wishes. Keith Temple". Handwritten at lower left: “The Times-Picayune. New Orleans, Sept. 5, 1965”.
Historical NoteThe Highway Beautification Act of 1965 was an effort led by Lady Bird Johnson to limit billboards and remove junk yards along highways. It was signed by Lyndon Johnson on October 22, 1965.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
