Additional text at center right: “Settin’ in the shade of a big live oak - he enjoys tellin’ a good’n - most of ‘em on himself!”. In the lower left, there is a side profile of LBJ. Additional text at lower center: “LB For Barber Dodger? J”. Additional text at lower center: “Most of those ‘new wrinkles’ he has ‘acquired with age,’ are just grin-wrinkles!”. Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: [blue] “For President LBJ - the only man I've ever known who is truely [sic] 10-feet-tall - whether he's horseback, or squattin' in the shade of a mesquite, or sittin' behind a desk in Washington - Although I disagree with some of his political policies (and I'm sure he would with some of my thinkin') In the course of tellin' folks that Speedy & I have met him and his Lady Bird - personally! I have popped the button off most of my shirts - And there's not a man in this world with greater resoect for him - or prouder to call Lyndon Baines Johnson ‘my friend’ Sincerely Jack Knox”.
Historical NoteAfter leaving office in January 1969, Lyndon Johnson went to his ranch in Texas. He attended the opening of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1971 and his memoirs The Vantage Point: Perspectives of the Presidency 1963–1969 was published that same year. He died of a heart attack on January 22, 1973.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
