Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two soldiers with rifles stand outside White House gates. One says, "At times like this, I wish they had named this the Grey House!" Artist signature lower left: "Blaine Hamilton Spectator Canada”.
Historical NoteDr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, leading to riots in many cities. On April 5, President Johnson brought 4000 Army and National Guard troops into Washington DC, some of which were sent to guard the White House.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
