Historical NoteThe Watts Riots took place in August 1965 in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles in response to police violence. Over the course of six days, 34 people were killed in the riots. On July 12, 1967, a Black taxi driver was killed by two white policemen in Newark, leading to five days of riots until the National Guard and state troopers came to the city with tanks and other military weapons. On July 23, 1967, Detroit police raided a bar in front of a large crowd of bystanders. People rioted in response to this. Governor George Romney sent in the National Guard and on July 24, he asked President Johnson to send in federal troops.
