Historical NoteThe Civil Rights Act of 1957 was intended to protect Black voting rights. Lyndon Johnson was able to get it passed through the Senate by weakening it so much as to not break up the Democratic Party. In this cartoon, the South tries to trick President Eisenhower into killing the civil rights bill, which Eisenhower thinks the South does not want.
