Historical NoteOn July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act to end discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, and national origin. It banned segregation and discrimination in schools, employment, public facilities, and public accommodations.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
