Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, dressed as a cowboy with a badge, is underwater pulling the reins of a determined horse underwater ("Civil Rights Legislation"). Caption reads: "You Can Lead a Horse to Water....." Artist signature lower left: "Conrad - © The Denver Post, 1960."

Historical Note
Lyndon Johnson’s ability to persuade and push people into doing what he wanted was referred to as the Johnson Treatment. The Civil Rights Act of 1960 made it illegal to prevent someone from registering to vote.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
