Historical NoteOn August 4, 1965, Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which banned literacy tests and poll taxes and provided federal oversight to ensure that new voting laws weren’t discriminatory. George Wallace was the governor of Alabama and a segregationist.
