Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Ships ("U.S. Cities") are in the sea ("Summer '66") with mines ("Riots”, “Tension”, and “Racial Violence"). One ship ("Atlanta") has struck a mine. Caption: “Perilous Going”. Artist signature lower right: "Jon Kennedy."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: “60”.
Historical NoteIn summer 1966, many riots emerged in cities such as the Chicago West Side Riots on July 12-15 and the Hough Riots in Cleveland on July 18-23 in response to unemployment, police brutality, and discrimination. These riots would continue throughout the following year into the Long, Hot Summer of 1967.
