Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (identifiable as Chief Justice Earl Warren "Supreme Court") dumps a bucket ("1866 Civil Rights Act") of mud into a pond ("1968 Open Housing Legislation"). Caption: “Muddying the Water”. Artist signature lower right: "Warren King”.
Historical NoteThe Fair Housing Act was a part of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. It was signed by Lyndon Johnson on April 11, 1968 that made housing discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin illegal. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 defined citizenship and granted all citizens the same rights and protections of those rights.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
