Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ steps up on the pedestal of the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln’s name has been crossed out on the pedestal (“Lyndon Johnson The Great Emancipator”). Caption: “Move Over”. Artist signature lower left: "Ferman Martin”.
Historical NoteOn July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act to end discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, and national origin. It banned segregation and discrimination in schools, employment, public facilities, and public accommodations. In this cartoon, Johnson is compared to Abraham Lincoln, who outlawed slavery in the United States.
