Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ rolls back a huge wave ("Wallace White Backlash") to save a man ("Civil Rights") on the ground ("Maryland"). Caption: “Rolling Back the Tide”. Artist signature lower left: "Ferman Martin”.
Historical NoteOn July 2, 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act to end discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, and national origin. It banned segregation and discrimination in schools, employment, public facilities, and public accommodations.
