Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ holds a paper (Civil Rights Bills”) and taps a senator ("Congress") on shoulder. “Congress” also holds a newspaper ("Pueblo Captured") and gives an icy reply, "Say what?". Caption: “Very Cool Reception”. Artist signature lower left: "Sam Milai”.

Historical NoteOn January 23, 1968, the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea, which claimed that the ship had entered North Korean territory. In response, President Johnson negotiated for the release of the captive sailors to avoid getting into another war. The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed on April 11. It enforced laws against hate crimes, granted rights to Native Americans, included the Fair Housing Act which banned housing discrimination, and banned the crossing of state lines to start a riot.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
