Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ (“Dem. Leader Lyndon Johnson”), carrying a rolled up paper (“amendments”), tiptoes over eggs ("Northern Liberals") outside the Capitol towards the direction of a sign ("A civil rights compromise which the majority of Democrats will accept."). A man (“Sen. Knowland”) stands on the steps. A man and a cat look at LBJ and a note next to them states, "He wants to prevent a party-wrecking filibuster". Caption: “Walking on Eggs”. Artist signature lower right: "Yardley”.

Historical NoteThe Civil Rights Act of 1957 was intended to protect Black voting rights. Lyndon Johnson was able to get it passed through the Senate by weakening it so much as to not break up the Democratic Party.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
