Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ is putting a donkey pin on a man "Lausche" who is wearing a freshman beanie. Behind the men is a large banner ("ΔEM (Senate Democratic) Fraternity") and a lit candle shaped like the Capitol dome on a pedestal. Caption reads: "Pledged...But the Initiation Is Still to Come!" Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star 1/5/57".

Historical NoteIn 1957, Lyndon Johnson was Senate Majority Leader. Frank Lausche served five terms as governor of Ohio until getting elected to the Senate in 1957. In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson gives him a donkey pin, referencing how he often crossed party lines and although he was officially a Democrat, he was often considered a moderate.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
