Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at a desk reading a newspaper with the headline "Proxmire Claims Party Leadership Settles Issues Off Senate Floor...!" Behind him, we see hanging coats and hats and a sign on the door reading "Cloak Room". Caption reads: "Well at Least He's Learning Something!". Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star 3/10/59."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "Regards, Lyn..... I'm sure you can get Freshmen and Sophomores straightened out .... (one way or another) ...."
Historical NoteWilliam Proxmire was elected Senator of Wisconsin in 1957 to fill the seat caused by Joseph McCarthy’s death. He was a Democrat that often voted independently. When this cartoon was made, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
