Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, dressed as a cowboy, leans against a fence and holds a newspaper ("Rockefeller headed for Texas on Southern Speaking Tour"). Caption reads: "Why?...We Have Our Own 'Non-Running' Candidate". Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star."

Historical NoteIn 1960, Senator Johnson was a primary candidate for the Democratic Party to become President of the United States. His political acumen, persuasion skills, and history in the Senate made him a supremely qualified candidate. Nelson Rockefeller, the governor of New York, also ran for president in 1960 as a Republican.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
