Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ and a man ("Knowland") sit together with a ballot box ("Ballot Re-Counts") in between them. Knowland holds a "G.O.P." clipboard, while LBJ holds a "Democrats" clipboard. Each gestures with a pencil as they speak to each other. LBJ is dressed in boots and spurs. Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "All good wishes to the NEW MAJORITY LEADER....." Handwritten across top: "3 cols. Friday [indecipherable]"
Historical NoteDuring the 1956 election cycle, Dwight Eisenhower won his second term over Democrat Adlai Stevenson. William Knowland was the Senate Majority Leader with the Republican Party from 1953-1955. He was succeeded by Lyndon Johnson, the Democratic leader, and became the Minority Leader from 1955-1956 and 1957-1959.
