Historical NoteIn 1956, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader and William Knowland was the Minority Leader. Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal in July 1956. In response Israel, the United Kingdom, and France invaded Egypt. The United States and Soviet Union managed to get the three invaders to withdraw, but during the Suez Crisis, the Suez Canal was closed from October 1956 - March 1957.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
