Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A postman (Summerfield) delivers a letter ("Postal Pay Veto") to LBJ at his office ("Senate Majority Leader"). Wavy lines emenate from the letter. Historical NoteWhen this cartoon was made, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader. In May 1955, Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield warned against a bill that would provide a 8.8% increase to postal workers would be vetoed by Dwight Eisenhower. Instead, Summerfield hoped that Congress would pass a bill that would increase pay while maintaining the president’s support.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
