Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A boxing referee ("Texas Primary Voters") is counting out a downed fighter with a black eye ("Gov. Shivers") who is seeing a very large star ("LBJ"). Caption reads: "The Lone Star State". Artist signature lower right: "Jerry Doyle."

Historical NoteAllan Shivers was a Democratic governor of Texas from 1949-1957. He belonged to the Shivercrat faction, which were a group of conservative Democrats in Texas. He broke away from other Democrats when he supported Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, and later when he opposed Brown v Board of Education in 1954.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
