Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To Senator Lyndon Johnson with all good wishes, Jack Knox Nov. 1958".
Historical NoteLyndon Johnson would have earned a place in history on the strength of his Senate years alone. Successively minority and majority leader during the 1950s, he displayed rare mastery of parliamentary technique together with boundless energy. When compromise was required, he was skilled in finding a way. He and the Congess' other Democratic leader, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, often rallied and combined their strengths. Cartoonists frequently focused on the friendship and cooperative spirit that existed between the Majority Leader and the Speaker of the House.
