Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A small elephant ("G.O.P") in a suit tells a man ("Alaska Election") holding a pickaxe, "You'll hafta take orders from a couple o' Texans!". The elephant gestures toward two cowboys ("Rayburn" "Johnson") in the background. Caption reads: "If Y' Join the Democrats -". Artist signature lower right: "McNaught Syndicate, Inc. Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus]".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at center right: "Regards to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, biggest man in the next-to-biggest state Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus] 1-9-59". Handwritten across bottom: "[circled] 3" "11-18-58 Mailing".
Historical NoteIn 1958, Alaska elected its governor in its first election as a state and the Democrat William A. Egan won office. A Republican elephant warns an Alaskan about voting Democrat since the Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn were both Texas Democrats.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
