Historical NoteWhen this cartoon was made, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader and recovering from a severe heart attack. The “Solid South” was a bloc of white segregationist voters in the South that Democrats aligned themselves with until the Kennedy administration and the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
