Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ wears a space helmet ("U. S. Spokesman for Peaceful Use of Outer Space") while tossing his cowboy hat onto a hatrack ("UN"). LBJ has a star-shaped badge ("Bi-partisan Support”). Caption: “I Like the Wide Open Spaces”. Artist signature lower right: "Hy Rosen”.

Historical NoteThe United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was founded in 1959 after talks first began in 1957 after the launching of Sputnik. During the Cold War, people feared that space could be used for nuclear weapons. In November 1958, Lyndon Johnson spoke at the United Nations to promote peaceful space exploration and international cooperation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
