Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Wearing a kerchief and apron, LBJ sweeps the room with a broom ("Economy Measures"). He has put items in a crate ("Tax Cut" “Fragile” “This Side Up”) and a waste basket ("Government Hiring Order"). Caption: “Gotta Get My House in Order for '64!”. Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at upper left: “3 col - Mon - Dec. 30 1963”.
Historical NoteIn 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Revenue Act, which decreased income taxes. However, that led to an increase in spending by consumers and businesses. Along with government spending from the Vietnam War and Great Society, all of this increase of demand led to inflation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
