Historical NoteIn 1966, the United States federal government had a budget of $134.5 billion. Of this, $69.6 billion was dedicated to defense, including the Vietnam War. All this government spending from the war and Great Society, as well as a tax cut to increase spending by consumers and businesses, led to inflation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
