Physical DescriptionOriginal two-frame cartoon drawing. Frame 1: A man ("Congress") pitches a low baseball to catcher LBJ who misses, as his glove ("Budget Requests") is high in the air. Frame 2: Congress aims the ball high and LBJ squats low, so he misses again. Caption: “Crossed Signals”. Artist signature lower right: "Brooks The Birmingham News”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: “-make 29 picas wide-”. Handwritten at lower right: “-Wednesday- May 4th 1966”.
Historical NoteThe Johnson Administration submitted 87 bills to Congress, and Johnson signed 84, or 96%, arguably the most successful legislative agenda in US congressional history, leading to a lot of government spending. In 1966, the year this cartoon was made, the United States federal government had a budget of $134.5 billion.
