Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ drives out of a building (“US Mint”) with a car ("45 Million Cartwheels"). Outside, another LBJ calls "Hold It!" while a storm ("Public Opinion") threatens overhead. Caption: “The Picnic Is Called Off”. Artist signature lower left: "B. Green”.

Historical NoteIn 1964, Lyndon Johnson had silver peace dollars minted in Denver, the first silver dollars since 1935, due to a coin shortage. However, in 1965, he passed the Coinage Act that forbade the minting of any more silver dollars for five years and the peace dollars were ordered to be destroyed.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
