Physical DescriptionOriginal two-frame cartoon drawing. Frame 1: Indian LBJ gives beads ("Excise Tax Cut") to a man in a coonskin cap, but holds a tomahawk behind his back. Frame 2: LBJ chases the man, "Want 'em back--plus 'em scalp!" Caption reads: "Indian Giver". Artist signature lower left: "Holland ©1966 by The Chicago Tribune".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Johnson, with Best Wishes - Ed Holland", "2/28/66", "583", "459".
Historical NoteExcise taxes are taxes on the purchase of specific goods and services. In June 1965, President Johnson signed a law decreasing excise taxes. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
