Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man ("LBJ's Blue Ribbon Comm.") unveils a headless nude statue dispensing largess. The pedestal ("Guaranteed Annual Income for Every American Family $2,000,000,000 to $20,000,000,000") causes another man ("Taxpayer") to faint. Caption: “POP? OP? No, POW!”. Artist signature lower left: "Warren King”.
Historical NoteIn a 1967 speech, Martin Luther King Jr. called for a guaranteed minimum income for all people. Protests organized by welfare rights groups raised the pressure on government to address poverty and guaranteed income gained popularity within the administration. In a 1966 report, Johnson’s Council of Economic Advisers said a negative income tax (another term for a guaranteed minimum income) “would be the most direct approach to reducing poverty” and “deserve(s) further exploration.”
