Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ holds a gun, stands in the Great Lakes below the border (“U.S.”), and has a pile of expended shells next to him. He speaks to another man above the border (“Canada”) who holds a dead duck ("Tax Increase"). Behind him is a duck blind ("Parliamentary System"). A small piece of paper “Peoria Journal Star” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Heck, Ah've Got a Blind--A Blind Congress!”. Artist signature lower right: "Riedell”.
Historical NoteThe Interest Equalization Tax, passed in 1963 by John F. Kennedy taxed American companies that invested abroad. Canada was exempt from this tax, but Canadian companies were uneasy about the act's renewal in 1965 in case the exemption changed.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
