Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Railroad engineer LBJ fills the tender ("Li'l Stable Dollar") from a tank ("Gold Reserve"). The tender springs leaks ("Same Old Balance of Payments Deficit", “March Exports less than Imports"). A man points and says “She sprung a new leak!”. Artist signature lower right: "Ralph Vinson”.

Historical NoteIn March 1968, there was a crisis relating to the conversion of dollars to gold, which impacted the funding of the Vietnam War and Great Society. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
