Historical NoteIn September 1965, Lyndon Johnson averted a steel strike by pressuring the United Steelworkers union under I. W. Abel and management under U.S. Steel Vice-President R. Conrad Cooper to come to an agreement of raising wages to $4.40 per hour with benefits. In July 1966, airline workers from the International Association of Machinists went on strike due to a lack of pay raises. Five different airlines were impacted and the strike shut down sixty percent of the commercial airline industry. President Johnson intervened and offered a settlement of a 4.5% raise that was rejected. Eventually, the strike ended with a 6% raise every three years. On August 6, 1966, Luci Johnson married Patrick Nugent at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with a reception ceremony at the White House. The marriage was televised and highly reported on.Additional Details
