Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ uses binoculars to watch birds including a hawk ("Hawks"), a dove (“Doves”), and an eagle ("National Affairs"). The dove says, “Coo!” and the eagle wears a hat with a star on it. When a stork carrying a baby appears, LBJ calls, "O, Lady Bird!". A small piece of paper “© 1967 by the Chicago Tribune” adhered to lower right. Caption: “The Busy Bird Watcher (Arrival of Patrick Lyndon Nugent)”. Artist signature lower right: "Parrish”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Johnson with my congratulations - Joe Parrish".
Historical NotePresident Johnson was a very doting grandfather when his first grandchild, Patrick Lyndon Nugent, was born. Pro-war “hawks” supported escalating the war to stop the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia. Pro-war figures believed that the war could be won if the United States had enough public support. Anti-war “doves” included both people who opposed the war ideologically, considering it to be unjust, and people who just believed the war was unwinnable.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
