Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ and a man (identifiable as Mao Tse-tung) are playing poker. Mao smiles as two men ("Morse", "Fulbright") stand behind LBJ telling him which cards to play. Caption reads: "The Kibitzers - -". Artist signature lower right: "Bill McClanahan Dallas News".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To Mr. President - Best Wishes" "[in red] 55.6".
Historical NoteDuring the 1960s, China supported revolutionary groups around the world against colonial and conservative governments. This made the United States government nervous about Domino Theory and the Sino-Soviet split created tensions between the Soviet Union and China. Also, in October 1964, China detonated its first atomic bomb, establishing itself as a nuclear power. Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman J. William Fulbright were two prominent critics of the Johnson administration's Vietnam War policy.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
