Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, in an Uncle Sam hat, and a man (identifiable as Aleksey Kosygin) watch a clock as the New Year approaches. The clock pendulum (identifiable as Mao Tse Tung) swings and the weights are atom bombs. In front of LBJ, the calendar has switched from one number (“66”) to another (“67”). Artist signature lower right: "Zeev DKZ”.
Historical NoteDuring the 1960s, China supported revolutionary groups around the world against colonial and conservative governments. This made the United States government nervous about Domino Theory and the Sino-Soviet split created tensions between the Soviet Union and China. The clock on the wall reads 5 minutes to midnight. This refers to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists famous "Doomsday Clock,' which measures how close the world is to global catastrophe.
