LBJ holds a croquet mallet in his hand and looks dismayed as a man (identifiable as Harold Wilson) hits a ricocheting ball past all the wickets ("Defense”, “Cabinet”, “the Pound”, “Common Market”, “Common-wealth Trade Wishbone”, “Nationalized Steel”, and “Rhodesia"). Historical NoteDuring the mid-1960s, the British government overspent due to its overseas defense policies. In this cartoon, the ball rolls toward Rhodesia, which declared independence from the United Kingdom on November 11, 1965. The UK responded with economic sanctions.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
