Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two soldiers with guns stand at check point. Barbed wire surrounds a nearby sign "Achtung! Sie verlassen jetzt West-Berlin". One soldier speaks to the other. Caption reads: "I''ve Heard of Kennedy, Johnson, Rusk and Stevenson, but Who's Jack Paar?". Second caption: "Channel Chuckles". Artist signature lower right: "Bil Keane". Additional text at lower left "9-11".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across top: "With best wishes to Vice President. Lyndon B. Johnson... from Bil Keane".
Historical NoteThe Berlin Wall was constructed in August 1961 to separate the Soviet-occupied East Berlin from the Western-occupied West Berlin, restricting movement throughout the city. In this cartoon, the soldier does not know about the talk show host Jack Paar, demonstrating how cultural diffusion was blocked between the Western and Eastern blocs. The translation of the German sign reads: "Warning! You are now leaving West Berlin".

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
