Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A huge foot with striped pants is about to step on a hand with a hammer and sickle on its sleeve which is about to grasp a small frightened woman ("West Germany"). Caption: “Hands Off!”. Artist signature lower right: "Warren King”.

Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race. The split between East and West Germany, as well as the Berlin Wall, emphasized the east-west split in Europe and the tensions of the Cold War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
