Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Frame 1: A man tells Uncle Sam, "-We went in debt, and spent millions to put them back on their feet-". Frame 2: The man gestures to Hubert Humphrey (“Our Vice-President”) speaking to a group of men, including a man (identifiable as Charles de Gaulle), and says, "-Why should we have to keep 'explaining our motives' to Europeans?". A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower center. Caption: “We Died for Them–”. Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning”.

Historical NoteIn 1967, Johnson sent Hubert Humphrey to several countries in Europe to fix relations and increase support for the Vietnam War. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
