Historical NoteCharles de Gaulle believed that NATO advantaged the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom over France and he wanted France to have its own nuclear power and pursue detente with the Soviet Union. He also criticized the Vietnam War. In 1967, Charles de Gaulle gave the speech "Vive le Quebec libre," which called for Quebec's sovereignty. France condemned Israel's actions in the Six Day War and set an arms embargo on the region.
