Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, a veterinarian, uses a stethoscope to check the heartbeat of a dizzy lion holding the flag of the United Kingdom. A first aid kit sits on the floor in front of him and a medicine cabinet is behind him. Caption: “Daktari”. Artist signature lower left: "Sandeson”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: “To - President Johnson, everybody's doctor it seems - best wishes Bill Sandeson”.
Historical NoteDaktari is "doctor" in Swahili, which is spoken in nations such as Kenya and Tanzania, which were colonized by the United Kingdom. After World War II, the United Kingdom declined in global influence because of decolonization.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
