Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at a cafe table next to a lamppost sign ("Rue de la Paix"), reading a newspaper ("Hopes for NATO Solid Front"). A man (“De Gaulle”), who had been sitting with him, levitates himself on the café chair. Caption: “La Grandeur Levitation Again”. Artist signature lower left: "Temple”.

Historical NoteCharles de Gaulle believed that NATO advantaged the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom over France. In 1966, he announced a withdrawal of France's military power from NATO.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
