Historical NoteIn August 1967, West German Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger met with Lyndon Johnson to announce troop cutbacks due to budget problems. This alarmed the Johnson administration because it would mean less defenses against the Soviet Union and its allies.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
