Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ stands on an icy pond rescuing two children ("NATO” and “SEATO") from holes in the ice. Carrying his ice skates, a man (“de Gaulle”) walks away with a thumbs down gesture. Caption: “They're Your Kids--Not Mine!”. Artist signature lower right: "L.D. Warren”

Historical NoteCharles de Gaulle believed that NATO advantaged the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom over France. In 1965, he pulled France out of SEATO and in 1966, announced a withdrawal of France's military power from NATO.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
